Summer experience as a veterinary assistant

By Stuart Callahan ’11

GLEN ALLEN, VA–This summer I worked as a veterinary assistant at Locke A. Taylor D.V.M., Inc.  In helping with cases throughout the day I performed the tasks of drawing up shots, running blood samples on various machines, preparing and viewing slides on a microscope, taking x-rays and ultrasounds, giving subcutaneous fluids, preparing medications in the pharmacy, and monitoring and caring for animals post-surgery (just to name a few).   I also stood in on many appointments observing the doctor as they would teach me about the different cases we saw each day.
