Teddy Bilodeau: Post 1

Teddy BilodeauProvider: IES Vienna, Austria2023 Spring One of the driving factors that led me to study abroad was stepping outside of my comfort zone. I knew no one in my program, or whom would be studying on Vienna for that matter. I would have no other option than to go out of my way and have conversations with complete strangers, hopefully meeting some friends along the way. Fortunately, I have met some life-long friends so far, which reminds me of my freshman year at Hampden-Sydney where I found myself in the same position. Studying abroad has always been appealing to […]

Jake PorterProvider: LSELondon, England2022/23 Year Abroad Before applying to H-SC, I had the LSE on my mind as a potential opportunity. When I went to alumni events with my dad, Jason Porter ‘94, Hampden-Sydney Alumni would subtly mention The London School of Economics, which I believe is where the thought of applying was planted in my head. Halfway through my sophomore year, I chose to apply to the General Course program, a one-year study abroad course. With the help of Dr. Strayer, Dr. Thornton, and Dr. Widdows, I was accepted into the program. The LSE was the best option […]

Zac Richman: Post 4ISA 2021Florence, Italy A list of advice for studying abroad1. Do it! The experience is more valuable than any dollar amount.2. If you fail, try again. I had 4 programs cancelled before my Florence study abroad worked out.3. Learn a little of the language wherever you are going. As Italy was my 5th choice, I learned almost no Italian before I went. Studying on a plane doesn’t actually work out so great when you sleep through most of it. 4. Get out of your host country at least once. If you can’t, get out of your host […]

Zac Richman: Post 3ISA 2021Florence, Italy I tried a lot of new foods while I was studying abroad. Even though I was in Italy, a lot of traditional Italian dishes as we imagine them are not traditional at all. First, meat and pasta almost never go together. They’re served separately as primi piatti and secondi piatti. No spaghetti and meatballs and very light servings of sauce, the pasta shouldn’t be drowning in the meat. They also don’t cut your pizza. Some very old school Italian pizzerias don’t cut your pizza here either and that’s how it’s done in Italy. This […]

Zac RichmanISA 2021Florence, ItalyAugust 7, 2021 My commute to class every day was filled with history that I sometimes ignored out of habit, as I became more familiar with the city. My bike ride from Via Venezia 2 to Via Ricasoli 21 became much more routine, after I learned to stop taking the bike down the 600 year old cobblestone roads. My bike was a rental I usually picked up from my walk to the city center, which I did most days. I had Florence to myself, until 3pm every day, so there was plenty of time to grab brunch […]

Zac RichmanISA 2021 Florence, ItalyJuly 27, 2021 When on the plane to Rome, I thought that my time in Florence would be set at a breakneck pace, running around all over the city to see everything. After walking around 10 miles the first day and sleeping in till 11 the next, I was frustrated at myself for wasting my precious and valuable time abroad. However as time went on, I realized I can’t worry about taking time to myself and sleeping in. I like to explore the city when it’s cool at night and stay in doing homework or checking […]

Dr. Daniella WiddowsDirector of Global Education and Study AbroadJune 15, 2021 The summer is here in full swing and many are eager to travel now that some restrictions are being lightened.  Indeed, we have four students studying abroad this summer in Greece, Italy, and Spain.  Be sure to check out the blog posts (link above) from two of them: Taylor McGee (now in Spain) and Zac Richman (heading to Italy in July). A big welcome to our new, incoming students this fall!  I look forward to meeting you this week and next during summer orientation.  Do stop by during the […]

Blake Page: Post 4

Blake Page AIFS Universitat Autonoma Barcelona, Spain Spring 2020 March 26 As this comes as no surprise, unfortunately I am typing my farewell blog from my home and not from the beautiful city of Barcelona. As a result of the current health pandemic we know as the virus Covid-19 my program, just like every other student studying abroad this semester, abruptly ended and all students were informed they had to return home. Although I am disappointed my time in Barcelona was cut short, I can not overlook the time I did get to spend in Europe, which I will be […]
