{"id":1131,"date":"2013-11-11T17:46:37","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T17:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/?p=1131"},"modified":"2022-11-28T18:19:38","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T18:19:38","slug":"drake-bishop-14-dr-kristian-hargadon-present-melanoma-research-at-asm-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/2013\/11\/11\/drake-bishop-14-dr-kristian-hargadon-present-melanoma-research-at-asm-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Drake Bishop &#8217;14, Dr. Kristian Hargadon &#8217;01 Present Melanoma Research at ASM Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, November 8 H-SC senior biology major Drake Bishop and Elliott Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Kristian Hargadon &#8217;01 presented their research on melanoma-associated suppression of dendritic cells at the University of Virginia at the\u00a0VA Branch Meeting of the American Society\u00a0for Microbiology.\u00a0 Drake began his research project in collaboration with Dr. Hargadon through the H-SC Student\/Faculty Summer Fellowship Program, and he is currently extending this work throughout this academic year for his Senior Honors Project in Biology.\u00a0 This work builds off of previous in vitro data from the Hargadon Laboratory demonstrating melanoma-associated suppression of the maturation and activation of dendritic cell lines.\u00a0 Dendritic cells are critical regulators of host immune responses that often control the activation versus tolerization of an immune response.\u00a0 Drake&#8217;s work has extended earlier studies by examining how melanoma-derived factors impact the maturation and activation of dendritic cells isolated from the spleens of mice.\u00a0 In this ex vivo system, Drake has demonstrated that the activity of these\u00a0bonafide dendritic cells\u00a0is also altered by melanoma-derived factors, and he has identified partial roles for TGFbeta1 and VEGF-A in this tumor-induced immune suppression.\u00a0 Next year, Drake will be attending Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was accepted as a sophomore\u00a0through the College&#8217;s early acceptance articulation agreement.\u00a0 He plans to specialize in immunology!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1132\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00509.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1132\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1132\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00509-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drake Bishop (left) and Dr. Hargadon (right) with their poster<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00512.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1133\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00512-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00515.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1134\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/11\/DSC00515-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, November 8 H-SC senior biology major Drake Bishop and Elliott Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Kristian Hargadon &#8217;01 presented their research on melanoma-associated suppression of dendritic cells at the University of Virginia at the\u00a0VA Branch Meeting of the &hellip;
