{"id":1834,"date":"2017-07-10T14:53:14","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T14:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/?p=1834"},"modified":"2023-09-26T13:19:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T13:19:14","slug":"h-sc-students-present-class-based-research-at-national-hhmi-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/2017\/07\/10\/h-sc-students-present-class-based-research-at-national-hhmi-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"H-SC students present class-based research at national HHMI symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2017 marks the sixth year of Hampden-Sydney&#8217;s participation in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute&#8217;s (HHMI) Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Sciences (SEA-PHAGES) program. \u00a0SEA-PHAGES is a national initiative in which undergraduates from roughly 100 institutions work to isolate and characterize bacteriophages, or viruses that infect bacteria, from the environment by molecular and bioinformatics methods. \u00a0Each year, students from Dr. Mike Wolyniak&#8217;s Molecular and Cellular Biology course work to isolate and analyze novel bacteriophages while Genomics and Bioinformatics students annotate and study the DNA genomic sequences of these bacteriophages. \u00a0Dakota Reinartz &#8217;18 and Wood Morgan &#8217;18 were members of both classes and recently presented some of the class&#8217;
