{"id":435,"date":"2011-04-25T09:33:24","date_gmt":"2011-04-25T09:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/?p=435"},"modified":"2023-09-26T13:56:29","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T13:56:29","slug":"building-rain-barrels-for-clean-virginia-waterways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/2011\/04\/25\/building-rain-barrels-for-clean-virginia-waterways\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Rain Barrels for Clean Virginia Waterways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-5.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-436\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-5-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday April 21, a group of H-SC students from Dr. Goodman&#8217;s BIOL 185 Water Resources &amp; Environmental Issues course  (plus 1 volunteer from CKI) teamed up to build rain barrels.\u00a0 These 41 barrels will be distributed at upcoming educational workshops run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longwood.edu\/CLEANVA\/rainbarrels.htm\">Clean Virginia Waterways.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-437\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-1-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"240\" \/> <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-438\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/blog-4-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rain barrels help the environment by conserving water, which does not  have to be treated and pumped to the home if it is coming out of a barrel.<\/p>\n<p>Also, rain barrels reduce runoff, which  can cause erosion, plus carry fertilizers, pesticides and other  chemicals into streams where they are very damaging.<\/p>\n<p>If your roof&#8217;s area is 1,200 square feet (30 x 40 feet), then 1 inch of  rain equals more than 700 gallons!
