{"id":901,"date":"2013-04-22T14:01:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T14:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/?p=901"},"modified":"2023-09-26T13:46:52","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T13:46:52","slug":"hampden-sydney-hosts-plant-genetics-research-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/2013\/04\/22\/hampden-sydney-hosts-plant-genetics-research-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Hampden-Sydney hosts plant genetics research meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Genetics class at Hampden-Sydney recently hosted students and faculty from the College of Charleston, Barnard College, the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, and Oberlin College for a meeting in which participants shared their research on\u00a0<em>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/em>, a model plant used for genetic, ecological, and evolutionary research. \u00a0The meeting was sponsored by CUREnet, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored group that promotes the development of undergraduate classroom research experiences (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.curenet.franklin.uga.edu\">http:\/\/www.curenet.franklin.uga.edu<\/a>), and was a meeting of members of unPAK, or Undergraduate Phenotyping of\u00a0<em>Arabidopsis<\/em> Knockouts, an NSF-sponsored undergraduate research network of which Hampden-Sydney is a charter member (<a href=\"http:\/\/arabidopsisunpak.org\">http:\/\/arabidopsisunpak.org<\/a>). \u00a0Students and faculty from each school presented their research to the group at large in the form of both oral presentation and a poster session.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_902\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/poster.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-902\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-902\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/poster-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meeting participants share their research at the poster session<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other meeting sessions focused on technical improvements to future experiments and strategies for implementing <em>Arabidopsis<\/em> based research experiences in the classroom. \u00a0Since its inception in 2011, the unPAK program has engaged 8 Hampden-Sydney students in collaborative independent research as well as provided research experience to the 29 members of the spring 2013 genetics course.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_903\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/group-photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-903\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-903\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/group-photo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">group photo of the meeting&#8217;s participants<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_915\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/wonder-of-Arabidopsis.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-915\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-915\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/wonder-of-Arabidopsis-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students are captivated by <em>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/em>!!!<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Genetics class at Hampden-Sydney recently hosted students and faculty from the College of Charleston, Barnard College, the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, and Oberlin College for a meeting in which participants shared their research on\u00a0Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant &hellip;
