Hargadon, Elliott Assistant Professor of Biology.\u00a0 Drake is studying how melanoma-derived factors influence the maturation and activation of dendritic cells, an immune cell that plays a critical role in the induction of anti-tumor immune responses.\u00a0 Previous work in Dr. Hargadon&#8217;s laboratory has studied this phenomenon <em>in vitro<\/em> using dendritic cell lines grown in culture.\u00a0 Drake&#8217;s work represents an extension of these earlier studies, as he is employing an <em>ex vivo<\/em> model system that involves isolation of natural dendritic cells from the spleens of mice.\u00a0 Drake will continue this work during his senior year Departmental Honors Project in Biology.\u00a0 Upon graduation, Drake will attend Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was accepted during his sophomore year through H-SC&#8217;s early assurance program with EVMS!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_981\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/Drake-Bishop-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-981\" class=\" wp-image-981\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/Drake-Bishop-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drake doing one of his &#8220;favorite&#8221; lab activities . . .
