In Gaul (modern France and Belgium), Julius Caesar&#8217;s campaigns of 58-50 BC brought the region under Roman control, a conquest he recorded himself in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico; Roman rule brought roads, cities, and eventually citizenship to a Gaul that would become thoroughly Romanized. In Germania, Rome&#8217;s ambitions met their limits: the catastrophic loss of three legions under Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9 halted Roman expansion east of the Rhine for good, and the frontier there remained a heavily fortified boundary (limes) for the rest of the Empire&#8217;s history, evolving further under later emperors like the Antonines. In Hispania (Spain), by contrast, Roman rule took firm root over nearly two centuries of conquest, leaving behind some of the best-preserved Roman infrastructure anywhere in the empire, including aqueducts, theaters, and cities that flourished for centuries under Roman administration.
