Discovered by French\n    archaeologist Beule in 1852, it was built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD from pieces\n    (some bearing clear inscriptions) of the choregic monument of Nikias. The central hall of\n    the Propylaia (&#8220;entryway&#8221;), through which entry is gained to the Acropolis, is\n    clearly visible through the doorway. The Propylaia consists of this central hall and two wings, on the\n    north (left) and south (right). In the 17th century, The Turks&#8217; supply of\n    gunpowder, stored in this portico, was struck by lightning. The ensuing explosion\n    destroyed the architraves and several Ionic columns. The doorway leads to the Pinakothiki, or Art Gallery, described in\n    great detail by Pausanias. Many paintings of familiar scenes from mythology and history\n    were either hanged or painted on the walls.
