Unlike Pompeii, Ostia was not destroyed suddenly but gradually abandoned as the harbor silted up and the city lost its economic importance, leaving behind one of the best-preserved examples of an ordinary Roman city, as opposed to a monumental capital. Its ruins include multi-story apartment blocks (insulae) that housed much of the population, giving a rare glimpse into how average Romans lived, alongside warehouses, bath complexes, a theater, and numerous mithraea (shrines to the god Mithras), reflecting the cosmopolitan, multicultural population of a busy Mediterranean port.
