The Arch was built by the Athenians to honor Hadrian, a great benefactor of their city. It marks the spot where the ancient classical city ends and the new city of Hadrian (2nd century AD) begins. To mark the distinction between the old and the new, the inscription on the western side reads, &#8220;This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus.&#8221; The inscription on the eastern side reads,
