Compare, for example, the Temple of Zeus at Olympia,\n                  where the east pedimental sculpture features the patron god\n                  Zeus but the west shows Apollo watching the Battle of the\n                  Centaurs and the Lapiths.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-h37fwpr elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"h37fwpr\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The\n                  West Pediment of the Parthenon tells the tale of the contest\n                  for patronage of Athens between Athena and Poseidon while the\n                  other gods look on. Just the torsos of most of the west\n                  pediment figures survive. Athena&#8217;s olive tree &#8211; the winning\n                  gambit &#8211; stood between the two godly contestants, each of whom\n                  was attended by a four-horse-drawn chariot and charioteer,\n                  little of either of which survives. Athena was attended by Hermes and Poseidon by the\n                  divine Iris (right). A tableau must be created\n        by the artist that fills the peculiar space or emptiness will overpower\n        the figures that are present; balance is more important than busyness.\n        While the east pediment corners sport the horse-heralds of the rising\n        and setting sun, the Parthenon&#8217;s west pediment fills the diminishing\n        space with flowing water gods. The procession begins in\n        Eleusis, eleven miles from Athens, and follows the Sacred Way into\n        Athens and up the Acropolis. Just as each of the ten tribes is honored in the memorial on\n        site at Marathon,\u00a0 there are ten groups of horses and men on the\n        frieze. 192 Athenian soldiers died at Marathon and were buried in the\n        soros; 192 is the number of soldiers carved into the frieze, in the\n        procession that will deliver them to their final glory &#8211; union with the\n        Olympian gods. And the sculpture on the frieze is not the only artwork\n        on the Parthenon that can be interpreted as a monument to the triumphs\n        of man&#8230;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-evy9lvl elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"evy9lvl\" one of the many\n        details that makes the Parthenon unique. On each side of the building is\n        depicted a different conflict, each of which is thought to allegorize\n        the recent Greek (mostly Athenian) defeat of the Persians: Gigantomachy,\n        or &#8220;Battle of the Giants&#8221; (east), Amazonomachy, or\n        &#8220;Battle of the Amazons&#8221; (west), Centauromachy, of &#8220;Battle\n        of the Centaurs&#8221; (South) and the Trojan War (north).
