{"id":744,"date":"2017-01-16T11:57:20","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T15:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/?p=744"},"modified":"2021-01-11T19:56:50","modified_gmt":"2021-01-11T19:56:50","slug":"bon-voyage-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/2017\/01\/16\/bon-voyage-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Tillmon Cook:  Post 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tillmon Cook<br \/>\nSemester at Sea<br \/>\nSpring 2017<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My name is Tillmon; I am from a small, rural town outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, but I go to Hampden-Sydney College located in central Virginia.\u201d\u00a0 This is the line I\u2019ve been saying for the past two weeks while trying meet all the new people that I\u2019ll be spending the rest of four months on a ship with.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-498\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/01\/semester-at-sea.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-498 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/01\/semester-at-sea-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"semester at sea\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MV World Odyssey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I am currently sailing to Kobe, Japan from Honolulu, Hawaii.\u00a0 I have now been a part of the sea-life for eight days, and even though my voyage has been to one port, I have seen some of the most wonderful and beautiful parts of the earth.<\/p>\n<p>I originally applied for Semester at Sea with uncertain expectations.\u00a0 I mean, who gets to sail around the world and see the places that you only see on National Geographic while taking classes for school credit?! I\u2019ll be honest, even though I\u2019ve been on the voyage for a little over a week, it still hasn\u2019t settled with me yet.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said earlier, I am traveling from Hawaii to Japan.\u00a0 I had never been to Hawaii before, but all I know is that I want to go back as soon as possible.\u00a0 I was lucky enough to have a field class (every class has one of these) that went to the University of Hawaii.\u00a0 Here, we listened to two environmentalists that spoke with us about Hawaii\u2019s environmental policy.\u00a0 Their focus was to have freshwater sustainability on the island.\u00a0 Afterwards, we ate lunch and then traveled to Hanauma Bay.\u00a0 I was speechless when I saw the landscape.\u00a0 I had never seen anything more tropical.\u00a0 I\u2019ve only seen these types of places in pictures!\u00a0 While we were at the bay, we snorkeled and got to see the different types of marine life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-746\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Hanauma-Bay-2-copy.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-746 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Hanauma-Bay-2-copy-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"Hanauma Bay 2 copy\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanauma Bay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day came to an end and my roommate and I were standing out on one of the decks.\u00a0 As the ship began to depart, the reality hit me pretty hard that I wouldn\u2019t see the United States again until I come home (and on the other side).\u00a0 All I could think was \u201coh man, I\u2019m actually doing this.\u201d\u00a0 Nevertheless, I am excited about my voyage, and I hope to learn as much as I can about all the cultures around the world.\u00a0 Not many people realize that they have a singular view about places.\u00a0 I know that I am\/was like this, so I want to experience first-hand and share my stories with others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-747\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Sydney-picture.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-747\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/01\/Sydney-picture-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Fun in Hawai\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanauma Bay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tillmon Cook Semester at Sea Spring 2017 &#8220;My name is Tillmon; I am from a small, rural town outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, but I go to Hampden-Sydney College located in central Virginia.\u201d\u00a0 This is the line I\u2019ve been saying for the past two weeks while trying meet all the new people that I\u2019ll be spending the rest of four months on a ship with.
