At this time of year, however, our thoughts turn to our 2019 graduates.\u00a0 We are so proud of the 18 young men who completed requirements for the Military Leadership and National Security Studies and Leadership in the Public Interest programs.\u00a0 They leave big shoes to fill.\u00a0 These graduates are \u201cmen of character\u201d who will lead \u201clives of consequence.\u201d\u00a0 Congratulations and best wishes!<\/p>\n<p>Another highlight of the academic year was our inaugural Wilson Fellows cohort.\u00a0 Forty-seven young men took part in the David Martin Leadership Program, where they learned about themselves and how to lead from where they stand.\u00a0 From their academic achievement to their extracurricular involvement on campus, these young men did a remarkable job. I am excited to report that our Wilson Fellows first semester GPA was a full .5 higher than the all-freshman average, and their collective GPA was even higher second semester!\u00a0 In addition, these students also took on leadership roles in clubs and organizations including <em>The Tiger <\/em>and the Union Philanthropic Literary Society (UPLS); excelled on nearly every one of our athletics teams; were selected to serve as Resident Advisors; and elected by their peers to serve on the Student Court, Student Senate, and College Activities Committee.\u00a0 Next year they will transition into the Society of \u201991, a program started by General Wilson and Dean Lewis Drew.\u00a0 It is humbling to work with such outstanding young men.\u00a0 Our College is better because of their engagement and our community, commonwealth, and country will be stronger because of their service after they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>In this newsletter, you will read about events and programs, partnerships with top ranked public and Ivy League graduate programs, and record levels of philanthropic support\u2014outstanding accomplishments that should be celebrated because they provide our students with the resources, experiences, and habits needed to lead lives of service.<\/p>\n<p>In all of our endeavors, students remain at the heart of all we do.\u00a0 Upon his election as President, General Wilson said the following, \u201cthe most important person walking the grassy knolls of this campus is the student\u2026he is followed closely, almost in lockstep, by the second most important person, the teacher.\u00a0 The most important event transpiring on this campus is the colloquy between the student and the teacher.\u00a0 All else is secondary and supporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Please know that you can support that great \u201ccolloquy between the student and the teacher\u201d as well as the Center\u2019s mission of providing \u201cmen of character\u201d the grounded theory and practical experiences needed to live \u201clives of consequence\u201d by engaging in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-left: 3em\">\n<li>Follow us on social media: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hscwilsoncenter\">Wilson Center Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/The-Wilson-Center-for-Leadership-in-the-Public-Interest-185394111509168\/\">Wilson Center Facebook<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Encourage a son, nephew, neighbor or high school student to attend our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsc.edu\/summer-leadership\">summer leadership adventure weekend.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Provide support: <a href=\"https:\/\/securelb.imodules.com\/s\/1845\/bp\/interior.aspx?sid=1845&amp;gid=2&amp;pgid=418&amp;cid=1063&amp;dids=34\">Make your gift today<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Come to an event on campus or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsc.edu\/wilson-leadership\">provide our students with internship or job search advice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Thank you for all you do for our students, the Center, and our College.\u00a0 I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.\u00a0 Please call (434) 223-6212, write <a href=\"mailto:rpemberton@hsc.edu\">rpemberton@hsc.edu<\/a>, or visit anytime!<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<br \/>\nRyan<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer Leadership Adventure Weekend for High School Students: Registration Now Open<br \/>\n<\/strong>Calling all alumni and high school students!
