{"id":366,"date":"2020-09-25T15:17:39","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T15:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/?page_id=366"},"modified":"2020-10-05T15:17:29","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T15:17:29","slug":"volume-3-issue-1-fall-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/volume-3-issue-1-fall-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Volume 3 Issue 1, Fall 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Director\u2019s\nNote<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When our Wilson Leadership Fellows returned to campus in August,\nthey were told that they are living in a leadership laboratory in ways that\nother generations of College students never experienced.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are battling a global health pandemic while our nation deals\nwith civil unrest and important questions concerning racial justice. Yet we are\nthrilled to have our young men return to the Hill so they can learn as part of\nthis special community during this critical time.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We endeavor to educate young men who will serve others for a\nlifetime, yet students must engage in that work today\u2014it cannot wait until they\ngraduate. This newsletter provides a glimpse into the ways we work with our\nstudents and the important principles that they learn. An appreciation for our\nconstitution and founding institutions as a means to resolve challenges while\nproviding dignity to citizens; knowledge about the life of General Wilson and\nother great leaders; events and activities that focus on foundational values of\nactive citizenship, leadership in diverse contexts, civil dialogue, and ethical\ndecision making; and mentorship coupled with our outstanding academic program\nare the tools we use to develop \u201cmen of character for lives of\nconsequence.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empathy. Respect. Courage. Compassion. Moderation. Sound\njudgment. Foresight. Honesty. Collegiality.&nbsp;\nTeamwork. Fairness. Humility. Loyalty. Civility. These are the traits we\nhope to foster in every student at the College and at the Wilson Center. Leaders\nwho display those traits will help our republic through these challenging\ntimes. It is clear that now more than ever that the world needs Hampden-Sydney College\nand more Hampden-Sydney men.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for all you do to support our outstanding young men and their experience at the Wilson Center. Read more about two exceptional young men we are proud to call Wilson Leadership Fellows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he was selected as president of Hampden-Sydney College in the\nsummer of 1992, General Wilson noted: \u201cThe single most important person walking\nthis campus is the student, followed closely thereafter by the faculty and\nstaff who serve as his mentor. The single most important thing that happens on\nthis campus is that colloquy between the student and his mentor. All else is\nsecondary and supporting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty and staff are called to help these superior young men\nbecome the very best versions of themselves.
