{"id":131,"date":"2019-06-06T13:57:02","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T13:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/?p=131"},"modified":"2019-06-06T13:57:02","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T13:57:02","slug":"end-of-year-banquet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/2019\/06\/06\/end-of-year-banquet\/","title":{"rendered":"End of Year Banquet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each year those associated with the Wilson Center gather to celebrate our graduates and to honor the recipients of the James Madison and Patrick Henry awards.\u00a0 These banquets are always meaningful events as our students hear from role models who have lived lives of exemplary service.<\/p>\n<p>The following students completed requirements for the <strong>Leadership in the Public interest and Public Service Certificate Programs<\/strong>, developed in the early 1990s for students interested in careers focused on selfless service.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/06\/publicServiceCert.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/06\/publicServiceCert-1024x641.jpg\" alt=\"Public Service Certificate Program\" width=\"525\" height=\"329\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-165\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCongratulations to:<br \/>\nMarcus Salim Ayoub<br \/>\nReed Allen Cooper<br \/>\nHollis Lee Jennings<br \/>\nJacob York Mitchell<br \/>\nGreyson David Nelson<br \/>\nEdwin Carroll Saunders<br \/>\nNicholas David Steen<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Harvey B. Morgan Public Service Award<\/strong> is presented annually to a graduating senior who has successfully completed the requirements of the Public Service Program at Hampden-Sydney College, who has demonstrated an interest in public service at the local or state level, and whose integrity and excellence of character reflect those qualities as evidenced in the life of Harvey D. Morgan \u201852.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the 2019 recipient, <strong>Jacob York Mitchell<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>The following students completed requirements for the <strong>Military Leadership and National Security Studies Certificate Program<\/strong>, founded in 2005 as an interdisciplinary program to support students interested in the study of national security and military leadership.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/06\/militaryLeadershipCert.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.hsc.edu\/wilsoncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/06\/militaryLeadershipCert-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Military Leadership Certificate Program Recipients\" width=\"525\" height=\"263\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-167\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCongratulations to:<br \/>\nTyler Marion Blevins<br \/>\nCraig Byram Cantley<br \/>\nNathaniel Russell Dracon<br \/>\nSteven Ramsey Hall<br \/>\nRobert Trent Jacobs<br \/>\nJack Henry James<br \/>\nJustin Scott Jarrett<br \/>\nHollis Lee Jennings<br \/>\nLee Christian Penninger<br \/>\nConor Philip Roberson<br \/>\nAustin Baines Salmon<\/p>\n<p>Each year the <strong>James Y. Simms National Security Studies Award<\/strong> is presented to a graduating senior who has excelled in the field of national security studies. The award is presented to a graduating senior who has successfully completed the requirements of the Military Leadership and National Security Studies Program at Hampden-Sydney College; who has demonstrated leadership and service; and whose integrity and excellence of character reflect those qualities as evidenced in the life of James Y. Simms.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the 2019 recipient, <strong>Steven Ramsey Hall<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> James Madison award<\/strong> is presented annually to an alumnus or friend for distinguished service on behalf of the College and Wilson Center.\u00a0 The two 2019 award winners are part of the very fabric of the College.\u00a0 Both spent their careers teaching young men not just facts and figures but of how to live lives committed to service and how to act with character.\u00a0 Congratulations to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Lewis Harrison Drew \u201960<\/strong>, Dean of Students 1970-2000 and <strong>Ronald L. Heinemann<\/strong>, Squires Emeritus Professor of History.\u00a0 Ed West \u201992, Chairman of the Wilson Center Board of Advisors, presented Dean Drew\u2019s award, and Dr. James Y. Simms, Wilson Center Fellow and Emeritus Professor of History, presented Dr. Heinemann\u2019s award.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Patrick Henry Award<\/strong> is presented annually to an alumnus who has distinguished himself in a career in public service.\u00a0 Congratulations to the <strong>Honorable Herbert C. Gill, Jr. \u201965<\/strong> who served as a Circuit Court Judge for 27 years.\u00a0 Judge Gill was presented by his classmate and friend Mr. John M.
