Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. David Marion and Dr. Ryan Pemberton took students in their<em>\u00a0INDS 385: Leadership and Public Policy at the National Level\u00a0<\/em>class to Washington for spring break. Students networked with alumni and friends and enjoyed the unique culture of Washington during a whirlwind excursion to our nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to fathom that this trip ended up marking the last Wilson Center events of the 2020 academic year.\u00a0 We did, however, go out with a bang and had a wonderful time.\u00a0 We are deeply grateful to those alumni and friends who served on a panel or supported the trip.\u00a0 You made this experience special\u2014thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a rundown of the trip:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday:<\/strong> Students arrived and enjoyed dinner downtown before enjoying a fantastic performance by the Capitol Steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday:<\/strong> We toured the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlelights.org\/\">Little Lights Urban Ministries<\/a> located in Potomac Gardens in Southeast Washington.\u00a0 We were also treated to an amazing dinner at Matchbox, a Thompson Hospitality Company.\u00a0 Thank you to Rodney Ruffin \u201982!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday:<\/strong> The group was given a red carpet tour of the Defense Intelligence Agency.\u00a0 Students were especially impressed by the museum and the Hall of Fame\u2014note that our center\u2019s namesake, Lt. General Samuel V. Wilson, was a member of the inaugural class.\u00a0 We then met with folks at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goacta.org\/\">ACTA<\/a> is policy group committed to liberal education, freedom of speech, and the connection of liberal arts education to democratic ideals.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goacta.org\/initiatives\/alumni_to_the_rescue_funding_oases_of_excellence\">ACTA has named the Wilson Center an Oasis of Excellence<\/a>. We then spent the afternoon hearing from a panel of alumni who serve as leaders in the financial sector at the beautiful offices of Fannie Mae.\u00a0 Thank you to Jeffrey Ketron \u201992, Toby Albright \u201999, and Adam LaVier \u201997.\u00a0 Martha and Ivan Schlager (parents of Will \u201921) hosted our group at their lovely home for a wonderful reception that night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday:<\/strong> The class was hosted by David Brown \u201987 at his offices at Exelon on Capitol Hill.\u00a0 David Sanders \u201901, Paul Pisano \u201989, and Tuck Shumack \u201995 gave us a fantastic overview of the current state of our politics.\u00a0 David Brown \u201987 and Tom Craig \u201999 then discussed energy and environmental policy.\u00a0 Kevin Turner \u201903 and Marc Brown \u201992 discussed serving in legal careers and the role of the general counsel.\u00a0 Trey Lackey \u201885, our incoming Wilson Center Board of Advisors Chair, put together a fantastic and inspiring panel of intelligence officials.\u00a0 We then went to the Capitol Hill Club where Dr. Paul Carter, parent of George \u201920, offered insights into life at the State Department.\u00a0 Dakota Wood, a retired Marine and noted national security analyst at the Heritage Foundation, gave outstanding remarks to our group about the current challenges facing our national security infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>It was an action-packed and meaningful week for our students.\u00a0 Thanks to all who made this trip possible!\u00a0 Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hampdensydney\/albums\/72157713703814566\">just a few pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. David Marion and Dr. Ryan Pemberton took students in their\u00a0INDS 385: Leadership and Public Policy at the National Level\u00a0class to Washington for spring break.
