Cover Photo: The Principles of Biology Laboratory (BIOL 151) has focused on exploring the microbiome of the common hop Humulus lupulus for the past 3 years as a means of giving students the opportunity to develop and implement their own unique research questions. Here, students allowed a hop leaf to grow on a petri plate with rich growth medium for microbes, and the result was a pristine configuration of bacteria and fungi in the precise shape and venation pattern as the leaf (Photo credit: Dakota M.
