Exploring the Ancient World

Marmaria, below the main sanctuary of Delphi, is the site of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (“Athena before the temple”), so named because it was the first shrine pilgrims encountered on the approach to Delphi. Its most famous structure is the Tholos, a circular building of the early 4th century BC whose exact purpose remains a mystery to archaeologists, though its elegant Doric colonnade and marble construction (the site’s modern name, Marmaria, means “marbles”) make it one of the most photographed monuments in Greece. [Editor’s note: the original site had only brief photo labels for this page. This paragraph was drafted as a placeholder and should be reviewed/expanded by Dr. Siegel.]
