Athens was the largest and most influential city-state (polis) of ancient Greece, and the center of classical civilization from the 5th century BC onward. Its Acropolis, Agora, and surrounding sanctuaries preserve the physical remains of the democracy, philosophy, drama, and monumental architecture that shaped the classical world and continue to inform Western thought today.
