Boeotia, north of Attica, was the homeland of Thebes and the poet Hesiod, and the setting for much of Greek mythology, including the stories of Oedipus and the Sphinx, and Cadmus, founder of Thebes. Boeotia’s fertile plains and central location also made it a frequent battleground in the wars between Athens, Sparta, and Thebes.
