The Sacred Way winds up through the sanctuary of Apollo to the Temple itself, lined on both sides with treasuries and monuments dedicated by Greek city-states to display their wealth and piety, and to thank the god for military victories or good fortune. Among the highlights still visible are the Athenian Treasury, richly decorated with metopes depicting the labors of Herakles and Theseus; the Siphnian Treasury, famous for its sculpted pediment and frieze; the Stoa of the Athenians; the Rock of the Sibyl, where the legendary first prophetess of Delphi was said to have delivered her oracles; and the Omphalos, the carved stone marking what the Greeks believed to be the center of the world. Statue bases along the way, like that of the Tripod of the Plataeans, commemorated victories such as the defeat of the Persians in 479 BC.
