Northern Greece encompasses regions such as Macedonia and Thessaly, homeland of Philip II and Alexander the Great, and later the setting for the Macedonian conquest that spread Greek culture across the ancient Near East. Thessaly was also famed in myth as the home of the Centaurs and Mount Olympus, seat of the gods.
