Messenia, in the southwestern Peloponnese, was home to the Mycenaean palace of Pylos (associated with the legendary King Nestor of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey) and was later conquered and subjugated by neighboring Sparta, whose helot system relied heavily on enslaved Messenians for generations.
