The Argolid, in the northeastern Peloponnese, was the heartland of Mycenaean civilization, home to the great Bronze Age citadels of Mycenae and Tiryns, and the legendary seat of Agamemnon, commander of the Greek forces in the Trojan War. Its later cities, including Argos and Epidaurus, remained important throughout the Classical period.
