Eleia, in the western Peloponnese, was home to Olympia, site of the ancient Olympic Games held every four years in honor of Zeus from at least 776 BC. Olympia’s temples, athletic facilities, and treasuries made it one of the most important pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries in the Greek world.
