The islands of the Saronic Gulf, including Aegina and Salamis, lie just off the coast of Attica and the Argolid. Salamis was the site of the decisive Greek naval victory over Persia in 480 BC, one of the turning points of the Persian Wars, while Aegina was a major maritime and trading rival to Athens in the Archaic period.
